Ever since the Fuji apple was bred in 1939 in Japan there has always been a search for better coloured red fruit. SAPO Trust has the home-grown full-red Fuji mutation – Fuji Royal – available for South African producers.
Plant Breeder’s Rights were granted for Fuji Royal in 2018 which bears testament to its uniqueness. The joint owners of Fuji Royal are Robert Zulch and Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing. This new deep red Fuji shows promise as an improved strain that will deliver a better colour and higher pack-outs.
The first large-scale commercial plantings have taken place in 2019 and SAPO Trust expects that the demand for Fuji Royal to drastically increase over the next few seasons. Trees are available through SAPO Trust with an associated tree royalty of R11.00 for 2020 and Fuji Royal is open to all exporters.
